Dili

Dili is the capital of Timor-Leste. It is mainly a commercial and administrative centre, with a few Portuguese touches such as villa-lined beach roads and the ruins of an old fort built in 1627.

Cruising after Dili

Tetum: Getting Started

Portuguese and Tetum are the official languages of Timor-Leste while Bahasa Indonesia and English are listed in the Constitution as "working languages".  Of these, Tetum is the most widely spoken, and a few words will take you a long way. Here are a few words to get started but, for a comprehensive guide to the language, get a phrasebook such as the Lonely Planet's East Timor Phrasebook.
